Raphael Stanzas
Raphael Stanzas ,where you enter through a narrow passage at the bottom of The Hall of the
Blessed Virgin, have this name because the artist took care, from 1509 to 1517, of the decorative apparatus, one of the most famous and representative creations of the Italian painting.
In the Room of Eliodoro there is the painting by Raffaello ‘’Leo Magno stops Attila’s invasion’’, May be it is an allusion to the battle of Ravenna in 1512, to which Leo X witnessed as a Cardinal and after which the French left Italy. In this painting, Leo Magno riding a white chinea, followed by two mounted cardinals, while Attila is frightened at the sight of St. Peter and St. Paulus, that
appear in the sky over the Pope with the swords in his hand.
Very important is The School of Atene, that is the triumph of Philosophy that is a comparison with the triumph of Theology. In the painting there is a staircase that from the bottom leads to a large
Vestibule leading in the Temple of Science, a magnificent architectonic Renaissance conception, that Vasari attributes to a design by Bramante. The great philosophers and the learned of the antiquity. The Princes and artists of Renaissance are all around the two great maestri : Plato and
Aristotle. Another wonderfull creation by Raffaello is the Parnaso: on the top of the mountain. where the fountain springs, Apollo is playing the Lyra, sitting in the middle, rapted in the musical
ecstasy. All aroud him the Muses are listening and are making crowns for the poets.
