By six large windows bended on each of the long sides and covered by a marked down vault.
The frescos covering almost the whole walls and the vault, are one of the greatest documents of the pictorial art. They were carried out from 1481 to 1541.
The frescos on the side walls and in front of the altar, were built under Sisto IV from different authors such as the Perugino and the Pinturicchio (Mosè in Egypt with his wife Sfora), The Botticelli ( Jetro’s daughters),Luca Signorelli ( The death of Mosè ), Domenico Ghirlandaio ( The vocation of Peter and Andrew). The vault was realized by Michelangelo who thought to a great frescoed composition that embraced the whole surface and that were not limited to the paintings framed by the painted architectures, but were filled up with people of any size. The result was an unparalleded fusion of architectonic, plastic and pictorial elements with an extraordinary balance of chromatic accords. In the rectangular spaces, among the arches, there are 9 paintings portraying the phases of the Genesis, among which the creation of the first man. The whole bottom wall, is covered by the Universal Judgement, a fresco celebrated and universally acknowledged as painted by Michelangelo between 1536 and 1541 and restored between 1990 and 1994. The whole magnificent scene is in motion, but the multitude of figures follows an extremely accurate disposition that clearly expresses the meaning, subverting the traditional iconography of the theme. High up, in the centre, dominates the Christ, Supreme Judge, near Him there is the figure of The Virgin Maria, while all around crowd the figures of the Saints and Angels that form the Paradise. At the bottom ,the damned are thrown down where Caronte , with his ship and Minosse, are waiting for them.
